Charles Cliff (1844 -December 24,1924) became a Pony Express Rider in May 1861. His brother Gus was also a rider and the brothers shared the route between St. Joseph and Seneca, Kansas which was 85 miles. Charles would leave St. Joseph at 8:00 am and arrive Seneca at 4:00 pm. That time included changing horses and eating dinner. Their section crossed the Kickapoo Indian Reservation.
After riding for the Pony Express, Charles went to New Mexico and drove ox teams for a freighting company. He later returned to St Joseph and enlisted in the State Militia. He also worked in the feed and flour business. Charles Cliff took the last ride of the Pony Express on September 25, 1861 and the last mail was brought in by his brother Gus.
Charles Cliff stayed in St. Joseph becoming a well known Pony Express rider. He took part in many local Pony Express and historical celebrations. He died at age 80 and is buried at Mt. Mora Cemetery.
