Hayden S. Campbell

Hayden Snelson Campbell was born in St. Joseph. ( December 4, 1896 – October 29, 1983 ) He designed and built the Campbell Model F aircraft. It was made of all magnesium construction and powered by an 85 hp Ford V8 automobile engine nicknamed the “Flying Egg.”

The Campbell F was 19’ 4” long and the wingspan was 36’. It weighed 1,240 and held 25 US gallons. The propellers were bladed. Its maximum speed was 112 mph and cruised at 97 mph. It got 16 miles to the gallon. It could go up to 12,000 ft.

Campbell flew it from St. Louis to Chicago in 2 hours and 33 minutes.
