Henry Payne Iba (August 6, 1904 – January 15, 1993) was an American hall-of-fame basketball coach, winner of two NCAA Men’s Division l basketball championships in 1945 and 1946. He coached the U.S. Olympic basketball team and they won two gold metals. In Tokyo 1964 and Mexico City 1968.
Iba played college basketball at Westminster College and the basketball court at Westminster is now named in his honor. He coached basketball for Northwest Missouri State (1929-1933) Colorado (1933-1934) and Oklahoma State (1934-1970.)
Iba’s teams were methodical and he is thought to be one of the toughest coaches in NCAA history. He was known as the “Iron Duke of Defense.” His “swinging” gate defense was applauded by many, and is still effective in today’s game.
Iba has been honored and awarded may times over the years. He has been elected to the Oklahoma Sports Hall of Fame, the Oklahoma Hall of Fame, the Missouri Hall of Fame, the Helms Foundation All – Time Hall of Fame for basketball, National Collegiate Basketball Hall of Fame, FIBA Hall of Fame and Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame.
In 1987, OSU’s home arena, Gallagher Hall, was renamed Gallagher- Iba Arena in Iba’s honor.
