Huston Wyeth

Huston Wyeth was born in St. Joseph on July 8th,1863. After attending school he began to work at Wyeth Hardware and Manufacturing Company with his father.  He became president of the company after the death of his father in 1901.

The business grew and buildings were added. There was a block of buildings and that large space was even added to.

Wyeth Company was the largest saddlery house in the world. Some of the Pony Express riders in 1860-1861 used saddles manufactured by the Wyeth’s.

Huston was an accomplished businessman. During his years as president of the Wyeth Company the business doubled in size. He was also one of the founders of the Artisian Ice Company and the Blue Valley Creamery which was one of the largest in the U.S. He retired from the business in 1920.

Huston and his wife Maude built the home “Wythewood” on thirty-six acres of land on Frederick Avenue in 1921.

In 1922 Wyeth went on a hunting safari in Africa and shot the largest lion on record at the time.

He bred the first AKC American born champion German Shepherds and at one time had 75 dogs.

Huston also had a home in Florida. He owned a yacht named Boomerang and was the champion yachtsman in the Nassau, New York rally. He won many races. The yacht was commandeered by the U.S. Navy for WWI.

Huston died on January 25,1925.
