Irving Bacon (September 6, 1893 – February 5, 1965) was an American character actor who appeared in almost 500 films.
He acted on stage for several years before getting into films in 1920.
He appeared in three Oscar Best Picture winners and nine other Best Picture nominees. Bacon could always be counted on for expressing bug-eyed bewilderment or cautious frustration in small town settings – playing mailmen, milkmen, clerks, chauffeurs, cab drivers, bartenders, carnival operators, handymen and docs. He appeared in shorts and feature length films. Bacon also worked steadily in a number of sitcoms, most notably, I Love Lucy, in two episodes as as Ethel Mertz’s father.
He was born in St. Joseph, Missouri and died in Hollywood, California at the age of 71.
