William David Snyder ( born October 7, 1939 ) is a retired American football coach and former player. He served as head football coach at Kansas State University from 1989 to 2005, and again from 2009 to 2018.
Snyder is in the College Football Hall of Fame and has won several conference and national coach of the year awards. In recognition of his contributions to the program, the football stadium at Kansas State, is named in honor of him and his family. The Bill Snyder Family Football Stadium. On December 2, 2018 Snyder announced his retirement. He finished his coaching career with 215 victories and two Big championships.
Bill attended Lafayette High School, graduating in 1957. He attended the University of Missouri for one year before enrolling at William Jewell College in Liberty, Missouri where he earned three letters in football as a defensive back and halfback. He earned a B.A. degree from William Jewell in 1963 and an M.A. degree from Eastern New Mexico University in 1965.
Snyder was hired to be the head coach for Kansas State for the 1989 season. The team had not won a game since October 1986 and they were labeled America’s most hapless team. The 1993 bowl game was the first of 11 consecutive bowl games and K- State won 7 of those bowl games. Snyder’s first tenure at Kansas State is still considered to be one of the most successful rebuilding projects in collegiate history.
