John C. Landis

John C. Landis, son of Israel Landis, was born in St. Louis ( March 5,1837 – April 2, 1913.) He was seven years of age when his parents brought him to St. Joseph.

He attended the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, graduating in 1861. He returned to St. Joseph and organized a company of Missouri Militia. Landis was appointed captain by Governor C. F. Jackson. He collected a stock of arms at the corner of Buchanan Avenue and Kemper Street. He went south to join Sterling Price’s Confederate Army. This resulted in the arrest of his father, Israel Landis. John was at the Battle of Lexington, in command, the Battle of Pea Ridge, Arkansas, Battle of Corinth, Chattanooga, Holly Springs, Luka, Grand Gulf, Tupelo and Farmington. He was promoted to Lieutenant – Colonel and was placed in command of the Missouri Division of Artillery. He was later in charge of the Division of Confederate artillery. While in Mobile, He met Miss Caroline Austill and they married on December 13, 1865. He returned to St. Joseph and was admitted to the Bar in 1878.

John and his father Israel Landis, and many other family members are buried at Mt. Mora Cemetery, of which Israel helped to establish.
