Shere Hite ( November 2, 1942 – September 9, 2020)) was a German sex educator and feminist. Her sexological work focused primarily on female sexuality. Hite builds upon biological studies of sex by Masters and Johnson, and by Alfred Kinsey. She also references theoretical, political and psychological works associated with the feminist movement of the 1970’s. Hite focused on understanding how individuals regard sexual experience and the meaning it holds for them. In 1976, The Hite Report: A Nationwide Study of Female Sexuality was published. Thousands of responses from anonymous questioners were used as framework to develop a discourse on human response to gender and sexuality. Over 50 million copies have been sold worldwide. She later published The Hite Report on Male Sexuality. Hite has been praised for her research but also highly criticized.
Hite was born in St. Joseph, Missouri, as Shirley Diana Gregory. She later took the surname of her stepfather, Raymond Hite. She renounced her United States citizenship in 1995 to become German and lived in Europe where she felt her ideas are more accepted.
